How to run your first tournament without a spreadsheet

Start with the ground, not the format

Write down how many pitches or courts are genuinely available, how long the booking lasts and the time you need for a changeover. A format that looks elegant on paper is not useful if it finishes forty minutes late.

Trophy starts with those constraints so the plan describes the day you can actually run.

Make the join step boring

Give every team, player and helper the same code before anyone arrives. Put it in the group chat, on the welcome sign and on the clubhouse screen. A player should be able to join without downloading an app or making an account.

Choose who can score

For an adult social event, both sides can send a result. For a junior event, keep scoring with the organiser and trusted helpers. The important decision is made before the first game, not in the middle of a disagreement.

Keep a correction path

A wrong score is normal. The dangerous version is a wrong score nobody can explain. Record the submitted result, the correction, who made it and why, then recalculate the table from the current result.
